Research Assistant — Human Rights and Security

The UNU Office at the United Nations in New York (UNU-ONY) is hiring a qualified Research Assistant — Human Rights and Security located in New York. He/She will work closely with the Head of Office and other team members on two projects between March and November 2017, a policy-oriented research project analysing the compatibility of UN sanctions regimes with international human rights law and a project exploring international human rights law, IHL, rights of the child and national security law constraints on handling children in the context of counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism (CVE) programming. She/He will have a graduate law degree with demonstrated proficiency in human rights law research, and graduate coursework relating to the UN peace and security regime. Two (2) or more years of experience in a legal research, clinical, legal professional, diplomatic, civil service, academic or relevant humanitarian or field role are required to apply for this position. Associate Human Rights Officer, P2

The Office Of The High Commissioner For Human Rights is hiring a qualified Associate Human Rights Officer, P2 located in Geneva. He/She researches and collects information pertaining to human rights matters, related to national human rights institutions (NHRIs) including their gender dimensions; assists in the analysis of information. Additionally the successful candidate drafts a variety of reports and correspondence relating to human rights matters. Also the successful candidate participates in hearings and consultations, prepare summaries of results. She/He will have an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area are required to apply for this position. Child Protection Officer, P3

The Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) is hiring a qualified Child Protection Officer, P3. He/She supports the identification of the protection needs of children in the mission area, and assists the Senior Child Protection Adviser and the mission leadership in devising the mission strategy for the implementation of the child protection mandate of the mission in line with the DPKO Child Protection Policy, the Mission’s mandate and UN Security Council resolutions on Children and Armed Conflict. The successful candidate also supports the implementation of the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism (MRM) on the six grave violations and participates in coordination mechanisms with relevant child protection actors inside and outside the mission. She/He will have an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, or other disciplines related to human rights. A minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in human rights, civil affairs, political affairs, international relations, international law, promotion and protection of the rights of the child, or a related area are required to apply for this position.
