Leiden University is launching MOOC on Global Peace and Security

Leiden University is launching a Massive Open Online Course on International Relations, Global Peace and Security. This intermediate level course requires a commitment of 4-7 hours per week.

The course is facilitated by Prof. Dr. Madeleine Hosli and several well known experts from the field and academia, including the former Secretary General of NATO, Prof. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who will share their insights into the UN Security Council (UNSC), the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Course participants will learn how chosen international and national organizations and mechanisms work to prevent violent conflict and how they contribute to the maintenance of global peace and security. Through interactive quizzes and exercises, videos and forum discussions, the participants of this course will explore how international power relations are changing the global world order and what are the most effective tools of conflict resolution and management.

Students of the course will discuss and share their perspectives on questions like:
to which extend can and should international organizations intervene in a crisis such as Syria?
how do important international institutions such as the United Nations Security Council function?
– what does the European Union and the African Union contribute to the maintenance of global peace and security?
