The MA Environment and Social Justice at York St John University is an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme that explores the connections between environmental issues and social justice. It is designed to help students understand how global environmental challenges — including climate change and biodiversity loss — intersect with inequalities, power dynamics and social structures. Students investigate these complex issues through multidisciplinary perspectives from the humanities and social sciences, with an emphasis on developing solutions that address both ecological and social concerns.
Teaching combines guided learning with independent study, encouraging active engagement through seminars, workshops and discussions. Research and communication skills are developed throughout the course, preparing students to tackle real‑world problems in their final Capstone Project. This substantial project allows learners to engage directly with stakeholders and produce work that has both academic value and practical impact.
The programme is supported by the university’s commitment to sustainability and social justice, drawing on expertise from internationally recognised researchers and contributions from external practitioners. Graduates develop analytical, research and communication skills relevant to careers in sustainability, environmental policy, community engagement and related sectors, with the option to progress to doctoral study
