The LLM Gender and Human Rights at Ulster University is an interdisciplinary programme that explores the relationship between gender, law and human rights within both global and local contexts. It provides a strong grounding in gender theory and examines how human rights frameworks affect different groups, with particular attention to the experiences of women and gender minorities, including in conflict and post-conflict settings.
The programme integrates perspectives from international law, human rights and transitional justice, encouraging students to analyse how rights are developed, implemented and challenged across national, regional and international levels. A key theme is the interaction between global and local systems, exploring how knowledge, policy and legal approaches are exchanged and adapted. Students also engage with contemporary issues such as migration, climate change and inequality through a gendered lens.
Teaching combines theoretical study with the development of practical research and advocacy skills, including critical evaluation of evidence and independent research design. A substantial dissertation allows students to explore a specialised topic in depth.
Graduates develop strong analytical, research and communication skills, preparing them for careers in legal practice, policy, advocacy, international organisations and further academic research in the field of human rights and gender.
