The MA Gender and Media at the University of Sussex offers an interdisciplinary exploration of how gender and sexuality are shaped by, and represented within, media and cultural practices. Drawing on feminist and queer theory, the programme encourages students to critically examine the role of media in constructing identities, power relations and social norms across different historical and global contexts.

Students engage with a range of theoretical and methodological approaches from media studies, film studies, cultural studies and the humanities, developing a nuanced understanding of how media both reflects and influences social change. Core study is complemented by optional modules that allow for specialisation in areas such as digital culture, activist media, representation and advanced gender theory, alongside a substantial independent dissertation.

Teaching is delivered through seminars, workshops and lectures, fostering critical thinking, analytical skills and independent inquiry. The programme also offers opportunities to engage with contemporary research and, in some cases, applied or project-based work linked to real-world contexts.

Graduates develop strong skills in analysis, communication and research, preparing them for careers in media, cultural industries, research, advocacy or further academic study.
