The Master of Arts in Gender and Social Justice at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, is a twelve-month interdisciplinary programme offered through the Faculty of Humanities. The programme offers courses that approach questions of gender and justice through diverse ways of knowing — from the traditional (reading, writing, theorising) to the applied (experiencing, collaborating, advocating) to the novel (performing, creating, hoping). Students complete two core courses — Theorizing Gender and Social Justice and Doing Anti-Oppressive Research — plus four approved electives, and a Major Research Project (MRP). The MRP can take one of four forms: a research paper, a pedagogical research project, a knowledge-in-action project with a community organisation, or an arts-based research creation project. Admission requires an Honours bachelor’s degree from a recognised university with at least a B+ average in upper-year courses. The programme is interdisciplinary and does not require a degree in a specific discipline. Applications are due by January 14 for September entry. Part-time study is available over a maximum of five years. The McMaster Graduate Scholarship ensures students receive a guaranteed minimum level of scholarship support. The programme prepares graduates for doctoral-level study or careers in education, law, journalism, non-profit community work, public policy, social work, and other fields.
