The MA Gender, Power and Violence at Swansea University is an interdisciplinary programme that examines gender-based violence and inequalities through theoretical, empirical and applied perspectives. It explores how gendered harms are experienced, understood and challenged across different social and global contexts, drawing on fields such as sociology, criminology and social policy. The course emphasises the complexity of gendered violence and the ways it affects individuals and communities differently.
Students engage with contemporary debates surrounding issues such as online misogyny, technology-facilitated abuse and strategies for engaging men and boys in prevention efforts. A strong focus is placed on feminist theory, intersectionality and research methods, enabling students to critically analyse the causes and impacts of gendered violence while developing the skills to investigate and address these issues.
The programme combines academic study with practical application, encouraging students to design and evaluate interventions, work collaboratively with organisations and consider policy responses at local and global levels. A substantial dissertation allows for independent research into a chosen topic.
Graduates develop advanced analytical, research and communication skills, preparing them for roles in policy, advocacy, community work, research, public services and organisations addressing gender-based violence and social justice.
