The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights Law at the University of Cape Town is a specialised postgraduate programme that examines the role of law in advancing human dignity, equality and access to justice. Situated within a public law framework, it explores how domestic and international legal systems shape the protection and promotion of human rights, encouraging students to critically engage with legal responses to contemporary social and political challenges.

Students engage with a range of thematic areas including international human rights protection, refugee law, women’s and children’s rights, and the relationship between law, culture and society. The curriculum combines core and elective courses with a strong emphasis on legal analysis, enabling participants to interrogate human rights frameworks and their application across different contexts, while developing expertise in litigation, governance and accountability.

The programme is designed for a diverse cohort of legal professionals, activists and policymakers, and adopts both theoretical and applied approaches to learning. Through coursework and guided research, students build the skills to analyse human rights jurisprudence, contribute to legal scholarship, and engage with real-world issues affecting vulnerable and marginalised communities.

A key component of the degree is an independent research dissertation or applied research element, allowing students to explore a specific human rights issue in depth. This focus on research supports the development of advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as the ability to contribute to evolving debates in human rights law.

Graduates are equipped with strong legal, research and advocacy competencies, preparing them for careers in litigation, policy development, academia, civil society and international organisations. The programme aims to develop professionals capable of addressing systemic injustices, strengthening legal frameworks and promoting more equitable and rights-based societies.
