The Human Rights LLM at the University of Edinburgh offers an interdisciplinary exploration of human rights, combining legal analysis with insights from politics, history and related fields. The programme is designed to develop both a strong theoretical foundation and a practical understanding of international human rights law within a global context. Students examine how rights are defined, protected and challenged across different legal systems, as well as the role of international and national institutions in promoting and enforcing them.
The flexible curriculum enables students to engage with a variety of specialist topics, such as conflict, migration, gender and socio-economic rights, alongside completing a substantial independent research project. Teaching is delivered through interactive seminars and discussions that foster critical thinking, debate and the application of legal principles to real-world issues.
The programme also benefits from connections to leading research centres and academic networks focused on global justice and social development. Graduates develop advanced analytical, research and communication skills, preparing them for careers in law, policy, advocacy, international organisations or further academic study.
