The MSc International Development and Social Justice at Birkbeck, University of London is an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme that examines how global inequalities are created, experienced and challenged across political, economic and social systems. It encourages students to critically engage with key issues in international development, including climate justice, gender and sexuality, racism, global health, political economy and social movements, with a strong emphasis on power, history and structural change.

Teaching combines seminars, lectures and collaborative learning, and students can choose from a range of optional modules to deepen their expertise in specific areas of interest. A substantial dissertation or research project enables independent inquiry under expert supervision, helping students to develop rigorous research and analytical skills.

The programme’s broad thematic focus supports the development of critical thinking, communication and research capabilities. Graduates are prepared for roles in international organisations, policy research, advocacy, journalism, community development and other sectors where understanding development and justice is essential, and can also pursue further academic study.
