The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) at the University of Pretoria is an intensive, interdisciplinary programme that examines human rights and democratic governance from a distinctly African perspective. It explores how legal, political and social systems shape the protection and promotion of rights across the continent, encouraging students to engage critically with regional and international human rights frameworks and the challenges facing African societies.

Students study core themes such as international and comparative human rights law, democratisation processes, and the functioning of African human rights systems, while developing practical skills in research, advocacy and policy analysis. The curriculum combines academic coursework with applied learning, including clinical projects, study visits and engagement with real-world human rights issues, enabling participants to connect theory with practice in diverse contexts.

Delivered through a collaborative model, the programme brings together a pan-African cohort and is jointly offered with partner universities across the continent. Students typically complete their studies across multiple locations, fostering cross-cultural exchange and a deeper understanding of regional dynamics, while benefiting from teaching by leading scholars and practitioners in the field.

A key component of the programme is an independent research dissertation or applied project, allowing students to investigate a specific human rights or democratisation issue relevant to Africa. This emphasis on applied research supports the development of critical, analytical and professional competencies aligned with real-world challenges.

Graduates develop strong expertise in human rights law, policy and advocacy, preparing them for careers in government institutions, regional and international organisations, civil society, and academia. The programme aims to equip professionals who can contribute to strengthening democratic institutions, advancing human rights protections and supporting social justice across Africa.
