The MA Gender and Development at the Institute of Development Studies offers an interdisciplinary and critically engaged exploration of how gender shapes global development processes, policies and practices. The programme examines key debates in feminist theory and applies them to real-world issues, encouraging students to analyse how power, inequality and identity intersect across different social, political and economic contexts.

Students develop an in-depth understanding of gendered analysis using an intersectional lens, exploring topics such as women’s economic and political empowerment, political economy, environmental justice, sexuality, masculinity and disability. The course emphasises both conceptual understanding and practical application, equipping students to engage with policy-making, programme design and research in diverse global settings.

Teaching is delivered by active researchers with expertise in international development, fostering a learning environment closely connected to contemporary global challenges and policy debates. A combination of core and optional modules allows students to tailor their studies, culminating in an independent dissertation that develops advanced research skills.

Graduates gain strong analytical, research and critical thinking abilities, preparing them for careers in international development, policy, advocacy, research and related fields focused on advancing gender equality and social justice.
