The Master of Arts in Humanitarian Action and Development (MAHAD) at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA) in Abu Dhabi is a one-year, full-time programme launched in 2021 in cooperation with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The programme aims to improve participants’ decision-making skills and their adeptness in managing diverse, multicultural teams, both in the long-term (project development) and short-term (crisis management). Students develop specialised knowledge in international development and humanitarian action, including its historical evolution, within the context of international relations, international law, diplomacy, and relevant United Nations agendas. The programme emphasises practical skills development alongside theoretical knowledge of major trends shaping humanitarian aid delivery. Courses include 12 credits of core subjects such as humanitarian action principles, development project management, international humanitarian law, and international development economics, plus 12 elective credits with options including women and development, human rights, crisis communication, and regional studies. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. AGDA alumni who completed the Post-Graduate Diploma can enrol with reduced credit requirements. Graduates are prepared for roles in international organisations, NGOs, and government agencies.
