The MSc Applied Gender Studies at the University of Strathclyde is an interdisciplinary programme that explores how gender operates within wider systems of inequality, including race, sexuality, class and disability. It combines theoretical study with practical application, enabling students to critically examine contemporary gender issues through feminist, queer and intersectional perspectives. The course is designed to develop both analytical understanding and applied skills relevant to real-world contexts.
Students can follow different pathways depending on their interests, including a broader humanities-based route or a research-focused track that emphasises qualitative and quantitative methods. Core learning introduces key debates in gender theory, feminist knowledge and research methodologies, while optional modules allow for deeper engagement with specialised topics across disciplines.
A distinctive feature of the programme is its emphasis on practical experience, with opportunities to undertake a research placement in collaboration with external organisations working on gender equality in areas such as education, culture, media and advocacy. This is complemented by a substantial independent dissertation that enables students to apply their learning to a chosen research topic.
Graduates develop strong research, critical thinking and communication skills, preparing them for careers in policy, advocacy, education, the voluntary sector or further academic study.
