The MSc Human Rights at the London School of Economics and Political Science offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding human rights, examining their legal, sociological, political and philosophical dimensions within a global context. The programme emphasises that human rights are not only legal principles but also central to broader debates about justice, policy, and activism, encouraging students to critically assess their role in contemporary global challenges.

Students engage with key issues such as genocide, humanitarian intervention, labour rights, gender and sexuality, race, and transitional justice, developing both theoretical insight and practical awareness. A core course introduces the main frameworks and structures of human rights, while a range of optional courses allows for specialisation in different thematic or disciplinary areas. The programme culminates in an independent dissertation, enabling students to explore a topic of their choice through original or interdisciplinary research.

Teaching is supported by a vibrant academic environment, with opportunities to participate in seminars, masterclasses and research activities through dedicated human rights centres. Graduates develop strong analytical, critical thinking and research skills, preparing them for careers in advocacy, policymaking, international organisations, non-governmental organisations or further academic study.
