The MSc Human Rights and Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science offers an interdisciplinary examination of the social and political forces shaping human rights in the contemporary world. The programme focuses on how rights are influenced by global political dynamics, encouraging students to critically analyse the challenges facing human rights institutions, movements and practices across different contexts.

Drawing on perspectives from sociology, political theory and philosophy, the course explores key themes such as identity politics, authoritarianism, liberalism, racism and social movements. A core course on the contemporary politics of human rights is complemented by a range of optional modules spanning areas such as development, gender, international relations and anthropology, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests.

Students also complete an independent dissertation, enabling them to conduct in-depth research on a topic of their choice. Teaching is supported by an active academic environment, with opportunities to engage in seminars, masterclasses and events through specialist research centres focused on human rights and social justice.

Graduates develop strong analytical, critical thinking and research skills, preparing them for careers in advocacy, policy, international development, government or further academic study.
