The MSc Humanitarian Studies at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is a specialised, interdisciplinary programme designed to develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond effectively to humanitarian crises. It focuses on the political, social and economic dimensions of emergencies such as conflict, displacement, natural disasters and global health challenges, encouraging students to understand how these factors impact vulnerable populations and shape humanitarian responses.

The programme combines academic study with applied learning, drawing on perspectives from public health, social sciences, policy and international development. Students explore key themes such as the political economy of humanitarian crises, migration and displacement, and the role of international organisations and governance systems. Teaching is interactive and research-led, fostering critical thinking and engagement with real-world challenges.

A central component is an independent research project, which may be desk-based, laboratory-based or field-based, sometimes involving work with humanitarian organisations in international settings. This enables students to develop practical research, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Graduates gain strong interdisciplinary expertise and professional skills, preparing them for careers in humanitarian aid, international development, policy, research and related sectors focused on addressing global crises and supporting affected communities.
