The MRes in Sexuality and Gender Studies at the University of Birmingham is a research‑focused postgraduate programme that combines taught modules with independent research, helping students develop advanced expertise in the interdisciplinary fields of sexuality and gender. Students engage with core theoretical and methodological topics such as feminist theory, queer theory, masculinity studies, postcolonial perspectives and representation, building a solid foundation for conducting rigorous academic research.
Delivered over one year full‑time (with part‑time options available), the course centres on a major individual research project supervised by specialists in the field, enabling students to pursue topics of personal and scholarly interest and produce a substantial thesis. Teaching includes a combination of seminars and guided study that develops critical thinking, methodological confidence and disciplinary breadth across humanities and social sciences.
Set within a vibrant interdisciplinary research community, the programme connects students with academics and peers working across gender, sexuality and related social justice issues, and offers transferable skills valuable for doctoral study, research‑oriented roles or careers that benefit from strong analytical and research capabilities.
