The MA Social Justice and Education at UCL is an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme that critically examines the relationship between education, equity and justice in contemporary societies. It encourages students to explore key debates about how systems of education can reproduce or challenge inequalities related to race, gender, class, (dis)ability and other intersecting social factors. The curriculum combines sociological perspectives with analysis of policy, pedagogy and social theory to foster a deep understanding of social justice as it relates to education.
Students engage with core modules that develop foundational knowledge in the sociology of education and research methods, and have the flexibility to choose optional courses that reflect their interests, such as rights in education, race and education, gender and development, or social theory. A substantial research project allows learners to design and conduct independent research on topics of their choice.
The programme is situated within UCL’s Institute of Education and benefits from its vibrant academic community and connections across related master’s programmes, offering opportunities for intellectual exchange and networking. Graduates build strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills, equipping them for careers in education, policy, advocacy, research or further academic study.
