PhD Studentship Human Rights and Big Data

The University of Essex’s Human Rights Centre is offering a three-year PhD studentship to undertake research on big data analytics with special emphasis on technological risks and solutions for protecting human rights. The ideal candidate will have a first-degree and a postgraduate qualification in computer science, law or a related discipline and candidates with mixed disciplinary backgrounds are also strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should also possess deep knowledge of big data and the associated technologies as well as awareness of theoretical issues associated with international human rights law and potential rights implications of big data and associated technologies. This PhD studentship is an award for three years which is fully funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. It covers annual home/EU fees and, for UK residents, provides an annual maintenance grant of £14,553. Additionally eligible candidates can apply for a research training support grant and overseas fieldwork support from the University of Essex. The deadline for this PhD studentship on human rights is 9 June 2017.


PhD Studentship: Respecting Human Rights and the Rule of Law in Cyberspace

Swansea University, one of U.K.’s leading institution regardings it’s research excellence, is offering a PhD studentship in respecting human rights and rule of law in cyberspace. This project will explore the multifaceted nature of the human rights challenges in terms of the state’s obligations to respect human rights in accessing the data and to protect human rights. Successful candidates should have a first class or upper second class honours degree and/or a distinction in their Masters in Law. Due to funding restrictions the studentship is only open to European Union candidates and UK candidates. The studentship covers the entire costs of the UK or European Union tuition fees for free years and provides a stipend. The deadline for applications is 15 June 2017.
