Call for Applications – PhD Scholarship in Fundamental Rights at the Hertie School

Three-year scholarship to pursue a full-time PhD in the field of Fundamental Rights starting from September 2020

The Hertie School is offering one three-year scholarship for an exceptional candidate to pursue a full-time PhD in the field of Fundamental Rights starting from September 2020. The successful candidate will be part of the Centre for Fundamental Rights team at the Hertie School. The Centre for Fundamental Rights will give the successful candidate outstanding opportunities to engage with Berlin’s academic human rights community through the Centre’s Fundamental Rights Research Colloquium as well as with human rights practitioners through the Centre’s Fundamental Rights in Practice events series. Berlin itself is a hub for governmental, international and non-governmental organisations operating in the human rights space.

We invite candidates with exceptionally strong academic track records – masters degree (or equivalent) in human rights, law, political science, international relations or related fields – and will provide a stimulating and engaging research environment in our fast-growing centre.

Research proposals should focus on contemporary and future challenges to the protection of fundamental rights in domestic, regional or global governance. We welcome proposals that aim to study the resilience and relevance of fundamental rights under changing political and economic conditions, including challenges presented by technological developments, the climate crisis or asylum and migration to the protection of fundamental rights.

The Hertie School in Berlin prepares exceptional students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society. The School’s extensive international network positions it as an ambassador of good governance, characterised by public debate and engagement.

Hertie School’s application portal will accept applications between 1 December 2019 and 31 January 2020.
